Follow Up Etiquette In The Digital Age

Posted: 11.25.2015

Follow up etiquette after a job interview has changed drastically in the past decade. Now, there is often an online prescreening process, a phone interview, and one or more live or video interviews. Turn to the tips below to gain a clear understanding of how and when to follow up in the digital age.

Before The Interview

Before the interview, you want to make sure that you know the name and title of everyone you will be interviewing with. This will often be provided in the initial email or phone call, but never assume that the person who initially reaches out to you is the person you will be interviewing with.

During The Interview

It is customary to ask a few questions of your own at the end of each interview. One of which should be to inquire about:

  • What is the next step in the interview process?
  • When can you expect to hear back?
  • If you can have the business card and/or contact information for the person you interviewed with.

Even if you interviewed with a representative from a recruiting firm, the questions above are still of relevance.

Directly After The Interview

After the interview, it is customary to follow up with a thank you email. Make sure the email is sent within the next 24 hours. The email should be short and sweet, no more than 3 or 4 sentences. It can express that you look forward to hearing from them soon and even why you feel that you are a good fit—but should not press too hard about wanting to take the next step.

2nd Post Interview Follow Up

At the end of your interview, you inquired about the next step in the interview process. This is usually something along the lines of a second interview that will be set up in the next week or so. If you have not heard back, go ahead and call or email to check-in once the estimated deadline has past. Again, this email, voicemail, or phone call should be short and sweet—and should highlight that you are still interested in working for your potential employer.

Once all is said and done, feel free to connect with the individuals you interviewed with on your preferred professional networking sites. Even if you didn’t get the job, this may just keep you on their radar for when a more suitable position opens up.
