Keeping Senior’s Spirits High This Holiday Season

Posted: 11.23.2015

While the holidays are an exciting time for many, they can be a troublesome time for senior citizens. Holidays are often a reminder of happier times with family and friends, and are far more of a challenge if this is the first holiday season after losing a spouse or loved one. The holidays can also be an increased challenge if this is the first holiday in a nursing home. Turn to the tips below to keep senior’s spirits high this holiday season.

Seasonal Cards

While sending handwritten holiday cards or letters may be a thing of the past for many, they offer a familiar and personal touch seniors appreciate during the holiday season. Go beyond sending a holiday card or letter to the seniors you know—and also stop by to see if they need any help writing, addressing, or sending holiday cards to their loved ones.

Increase Socialization

Even though this may be a busy time of year for you, seniors may need a bit more TLC during the holiday season. Get the entire family involved and arrange to visit, both in groups and individually. Participate in holiday activities, such as making cookies, holiday arts and crafts, and even watching your favorite holiday movies together. Also make sure that you arrange for transportation to and from holiday events with friends and family. Don’t forget Uber services for seniors and consider hiring a caregiver to improve socialization during the holiday season. If a senior is not able to leave their nursing home, try to visit during the senior community’s holiday events.

Holiday Gift Ideas For Seniors

Even if the seniors in your life don’t need much, or they live in a shared room with limited space—a few thoughtful gifts will go a long way. Below are a few gifts perfect for seniors:

  • Holiday treats—cookies, candy, and other non-perishables. *Don’t forget dietary restrictions
  • Handmade gifts from the grandkids
  • Ornaments or holiday décor
  • Mini Christmas tree
  • Plants or flowers always brighten the day
  • Bathrobe, slippers, or throw blanket
  • Holiday themed sweatshirt or socks
  • Stationary and stamps
  • Books or magazine and newspaper subscriptions

  • Practical gifts for seniors on a budget, such as gift cards for groceries, clothing, or prescriptions

The tips above will help reduce the likelihood of depression that is often increased during the holiday season. If you want to help brighten the holiday for a senior in your community, outside of your friends and family, consider participating in the Be a Santa to a Senior program.
