Making Nursing Home Rooms Feel Like Home
Posted: 11.13.2015Whether a stay in a nursing home or rehab center is short-term or long-term, personalizing the room will make it feel more like home. Since a different approach is required when decorating a smaller space, such as a shared room in a nursing home, you may not be sure of where to begin. Before you start decorating, make sure you understand the nursing home rules. The tips below will help you get heading in the right direction.
Add A Touch Of Nature
Check to see if plants are allowed, and if they are, select a low maintenance plant that doesn’t take up too much room. Even if plants aren’t allowed, add another touch of nature. Consider a bouquet of silk flowers, dried flowers, or a beautiful nature-inspired picture or vase.
Hang A Few Things On The Wall
Even if nailing items on the wall is not allowed, there are many options with removable hooks and temporary solutions. Either way, select photo frames and artwork that is lightweight. If needed, you can even tape things to the wall.
Entertainment Items
While the items above will make a nursing home room look and feel comfortable, you must not forget to select a few items that will help pass the time. While the nursing home has activities during the day, there may be days when residents want some time to themselves. Depending on the resident’s hobbies, consider entertainment items such as:
- Small arts and crafts
- Books, magazines, and newspapers
- A deck of cards
- Crossword puzzles, word searches, and other brain games
- Radio or cd player for music
- Laptop, smartphone or other electronic devices
Add A Few Comforts Of Home
Last, but certainly not least, bring in a few comforts of home that will be a meaningful addition the resident will enjoy. Turn to color to liven up the room, but since the space is small, stick with a consistent color theme. A few ideas to consider are:
- A small piece of furniture, like a dresser, ottoman, chair, or even a standup mirror.
- Throw pillow, throw blanket, and if allowed—your own bedding.
- Comfy bathrobe and non-slip slippers.
- Decorative vase and other accessories that can be placed on the nightstand and dresser.
- Photo albums and photos of family and friends.
