The Invaluable Role of a Senior Care Manager

Posted: 09.29.2015

As you continue to explore career options within the senior care sector, you may find yourself considering the role of a senior care manager, also referred to as a geriatric care manager. Over the last decade, the demand for senior care managers has increased drastically. This is due both to the growing aging population and the desire for more active and independent retirement. Some senior care managers’ services are required short-term, while others play a long-term role in their seniors’ lives.

There are More Options for Seniors Now Than Ever Before

There have always been many options for seniors, but there are certainly more options and resources than ever before. The process of managing a spouse or parent’s care can be quite overwhelming, which is where a senior care manager can assist. As the senior care manager, you’ll help determine everything from short-term and long-term health and safety needs. This could entail assisting burnt-out family members in finding the solutions to provide them with respite care, finding a living solution that fits into a senior’s budget, or referring seniors to other resources they require.

Seniors and Their Families Need an Impartial Advocate

As a senior care manager, you’ll create a Care Plan for each of your seniors and, in many cases, will be asked to advocate on behalf of your senior. This could be because you see an area of opportunity in their care, because the nearest family members live out of state, or because nearby family members are unfamiliar with their loved ones care needs.

The Desire for an Improved Quality of Life

Whether a senior’s goal is to live at home or with family, or they want to transition into a long-term care facility, many seniors want to live as actively or independently as they can for as long as possible. This means you can help seniors determine what services and solutions will best meet their individual goals. While ensuring that regular medical attention is received—and that ADLs are taken care of—you can also help seniors explore the advantages of visiting nurses and physicians, telemedicine, adult day care, or even hiring a non-medical caregiver for errands, outings, and socialization.
A career as a senior care manager is a highly rewarding one because you’ll provide your seniors and their family with the peace of mind that they’re receiving the best quality of care available.
