Tips for Keeping Your Resume Up-To-Date

Posted: 09.06.2015

Even if you’ve found the perfect job and the perfect employer—it’s important to keep your resume up-to-date. An updated resume is essential when applying for internal promotions, and keeping your resume current will make life easier when you’re on the job market in the future. Below are a few tips for keeping your resume up-to-date.

Keep a Master Skill List

One of the best ways to keep your resume up-to-date is to work from a master skill list. Even if you’ve worked in the same position since the last time your resume was updated, you have likely acquired new skills. By keeping a master list of new achievements, new certifications, specialized training, and new software and medical equipment—transferring your new skills to your resume will be easy.

Factor in Joint Achievements

Joint achievements are often left out of a resume because they are forgotten or you aren’t sure you can add a shared accomplishment—yes you can! As a senior care professional, you’re sure to be part of a team or department who works together to accomplish larger goals. However, many forget to include their role in group projects or group goals on their resume. For example, if you helped created the system to reduce COGs by 10% from one fiscal year to the next, add your contributions to the resume.

Don’t Forget the Old and New Technology

Whether due to the new ICD-10 compliance, or the continued advances in mobile technology—don’t forget to add every new software, gadget, and electronic tool you learn to your resume. If applicable, include your role in helping to train or transition to new technology.

Update at Least Twice Each Year

The steps above are more related to gathering information, but you should also sit down at least twice a year to update your resume. While updating, consider whether some of your older or less relevant jobs can be removed. Also, replace some of your more basic job duties with your new skills and achievements. Don’t forget to update both your personal resume and your online resumes.

The tips above will ensure that the next time you need your resume, the information is easy to access—and that your resume will only require a few minor tweaks before it’s ready to pass along to potential employers.
