Creative Resume Writing 2015

Posted: 08.16.2015

Your work experience isn’t the only thing that should stand out on your resume. Your resume itself needs to shine. Below are a few things to keep in mind while updating or creating a new resume in 2015.

Invest In A Standout Resume Template

In this electronically savvy world, your resume should have some graphic design blended in. Since most of us are not skilled graphic designers, investing in a resume template is the best way to go. Aside from the visual appeal, a template will also allow you to keep your resume organized and well laid out.

Call Out Boxes

While bold font and bullet points make key information stand out, a call out box takes things to the next level. The reader’s eyes are directed to the box to ensure your best attributes won’t go unnoticed.

Visuals

A popular trend for executive-level and management resumes is relevant visuals. While you can simply state that you were able to reduce spending by 20% over the last 5-years, adding a graph or chart to highlight your accomplishments is far more memorable.

Customized Resume

It was once acceptable to have one resume for all applications, and to customize your cover letter accordingly—but a growing trend is to have a general resume to work from, and to customize it for each position you apply to. While the overall content will be the same, you can hyper-target the specific skills the position you are applying for requires.

Balance Professionalism With A Personal Touch

If you’re applying for a job in senior care, you may be looking for a way to add a human touch to your resume. To do this, many on the job market are choosing to write their job responsibilities in first person. For example, instead of saying:
  • Monitored vital signs for 20-patients
  • I monitored vital signs for 20-patients on the floor I served.
While this strategy is great for adding personal touch, it shouldn’t be used to brag. You should leave your awards, degrees, and other accomplishments in standard resume verbiage.

Keep An Updated Master List

It’s also wise to keep an updated master list of all of your past jobs and pertinent information for reference. Your master list should include factors such as salary, job title, supervisors name and contact information, and a list of job duties. When you apply for a new job, compile the information in your master list.
The tips above will help you to create a modern resume, designed to attract attention.
